When the buttons on a BMW key stop clicking or the casing splits at the seam, the electronics inside are usually still healthy. This 3 button shell with blade lets you keep those working internals and simply rehouse them. It suits BMW 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7 Series cars along with E90, E92 and E93 bodies, M3, M5, X3 and X5, provided the new case looks the same as your current key. There are no electronics, transponder chip or battery inside the shell; everything that makes the key function transfers across from your old one. Replacing a whole key through a dealer can run to hundreds of dollars, which makes a simple case swap the sensible first option whenever the buttons and chip still respond.
No programming is required because the coded module never changes, only its housing. Open your existing key carefully, lift the internal module out, and remember to bring the transponder chip across if your key carries one, as the car will not start without it. Seat the module in the new case, clip it shut, and the buttons work exactly as before. The one trade job is the blade: it ships uncut, so a local locksmith needs to cut it to match your door and ignition. Assembly instructions are provided with the listing to guide the swap. Take your time with the small parts, work over a clean bench so nothing pings away, and keep the old shell until the new one is fully assembled and tested.
If your electronics are damaged as well as the case, a housing alone will not fix things; older E-body owners can look at the BMW 3 button complete remote key for E31 E32 E34, which includes the electronic boards. Households running two BMWs often take the 2 pack BMW smart key fob shell 3 button to refresh both keys in one go. The same rehousing approach works across other makes too, such as the Land Rover Freelander remote key fob shell 5 button.
As an Australian-based store specialising in replacement remotes and key fobs, The Remote Factory keeps shells like this BMW case in stock and dispatches all items within 24 hours of ordering. Standard delivery within Australia takes 1 to 5 working days, while New Zealand orders arrive in 2 to 8 working days. Checkout accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, Shop Pay and Apple Pay, and if the case does not match your key when it arrives, the 30-day return policy has you covered. Questions about which shell fits your BMW can go to contact@theremotefactory.com.au before you commit.
No. It is a housing and uncut blade only, with no circuit board, transponder chip or battery inside. It is designed for keys where the case is cracked or the buttons are worn but the internals still work. You move your existing module and chip into the new shell yourself, which takes a few minutes with a small screwdriver and a careful hand.
No programming is needed. The coded electronics and transponder your car already recognises stay exactly as they are; only the plastic around them changes. Once the module is seated in the new case, locking and remote functions behave the same as before. The only outside help required is a locksmith visit to cut the fresh blade to suit your doors and ignition.
It suits 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7 Series cars plus E90, E92, E93, M3, M5, X3 and X5. The practical test is visual: if the shell pictured looks the same shape as your current key, with the same three-button layout and blade style, it should fit. If yours differs in shape or button count, send a photo to support before ordering.
Many BMW keys hide a small glass or ceramic transponder chip inside the housing, separate from the button board. The immobiliser reads this chip when you start the car, so if it stays behind in the old shell the engine will not turn over. When you open your original key, check for the chip, lift it out gently and seat it in the matching recess of the new case.
